Burrishoole to host its 25th annual walking festival 1st – 4th June
WALKING enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to explore the countryside off the Great Western Greenway this June bank holiday weekend at Burrishoole Walking Festival.
For the past 25 years Burrishoole Walking Festival has been revealing a piece of hidden Ireland to local and international walkers.
Established in 1987, the festival is organised by an enthusiastic bunch of local volunteers, with farmers swapping their wellies for walking boots to act as guides through lands that they know best.
It is a very unique walking experience, taking you right into the heart of some of Ireland’s both breathtaking landscapes, with views towards Croagh Patrick and Achill and out over Clew Bay.
And it’s not just about the scenery, as the guides impart their local knowledge of the heritage, folklore, customs, flora and fauna of the area.
To date, thousands of people have enjoyed the Great Western Greenway between Westport and Achill. Burrishoole Walking Festival takes you into unspoilt countryside in the area between Newport and Mulranny, with a range of walks to suit all levels.
High-octane walkers can go into the mountains, while there are easier routes for those who prefer a more leisurely stroll. Families are also accommodated on both days with walks on the greenway.
To mark the 25th anniversary, the committee, chaired by Mr. Jackie Rumley, have a bumper weekend planned from Friday to Monday, June 1 to 4. The event will also mark the 75th anniversary of the closing of the railway line, along which the Great Western Greenway now runs.
Registration is available online at www.burrishoolewalkfest.net or on the morning of the walks at Derrada Community Centre.
